It ison the rise, and they are worried that it may get out of control. Teenage sexcan be a problem because of the pregnancies and many diseases it can cause. Onesolution that has been proposed is to distribute condoms in public high schools. This is a topic that is controversial and has been hotly debated for years. There are people who think it would be a good idea and those who think it mayworsen the problem rather than solve it. The reason that people want to distribute condoms in high school is totry to prevent teenage pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and (I separatethis from the category of STDs because it is so widespread, deadly, important,frightening, etc.) H.I.V infection. The theory is that if condoms were givenout or made available at high schools, then the students would be more inclinedto use them. They would have them or be able to get them if they need to usethem. This would cut down on unprotected sexual intercourse and prevent thepregnancies, sexually transmitted diseases, and H.I.V. infection. If a studentwas at a party and decided, on the spur of the moment, to engage in sexualintercourse, then it is more likely that they have a condom if schoolsdistributed them. This sounds good in theory, but will it really work? Ifschools distribute condoms, shouldnt they also teach the students how to usethem and teach them a little about sex (sex education in schools, anothercontroversial topic) ?The world certainly needs to try to decrease teenage pregnancies, STDs,and H.I.V. infection. In an article from the New York Times, the United Nationsreports that women, especially sexually active teenage girls, have a higher rateof H.I.V. infection than men in that age group. It cited the slow developmentof mucous membranes as the reason for the lower protection against infection andincreased risk of getting H.I.V. It mentions that in Rwanda, 25% of pregnantwomen are infected, and 17% of those who have teenage sex will be infected. Those numbers are staggering. In the United States, if even 5% of teenagers whohave had sex become infected with H.I.V., then that would translate to hundredsof thousands of teenagers. This shows that H.I.V. could be a bigger problemthan it already is if nothing is done about it, and some people think thatdistributing condoms would help keep the problem from getting worse. Condom distribution might work, but what if the students do not usethem? Also, distributing condoms might start a student to become sexually activethat otherwise would not be. Wouldnt condom distribution then increase teenagesex thus increasing the chance of getting pregnant and contracting H.I.V.? Oncethis student becomes sexually active he or she might not use a condom every timethey have sex. Even if they do, condoms are not 100% effective. I repeat-CONDOMS ARE NOT 100% EFFECTIVE. They are only 92-96% effective againstpregnancy and not at all effective for blocking H.I.V. transmission. Wouldnt abetter option then be to control teenage sex?Making love is not something to play around with. When people decide todo it, they make a life and death decision. If they contract an STD they risktheir life for death. I think that starting in junior high school, students should learn aboutpregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases, and H.I.V. There would be a course ora section of a course dedicated to health where students learn about thesesubjects. Then in high school, students should do a more in-depth study of theconsequences of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. This could be doneas a part of a biology course or as a research project in an English class. Finally, students should learn about H.I.V. and AIDS, how it affects the livesof those who have it, and what can be done about it. Again, this could be aseparate course that is required or a part of another required course. Then,pamphlets about all these things should be made available at the health (ornurses) office and suggested for the students to read before they receivecondoms. Gladitorial Combat Kyle Keown Mrs. Melony Jones World History 4th 2 November 2000 words The culture of Ancient Rome had a distinct way to entertain its citizens. Besides spending times at the baths, Romans found pleasure and delight in the games held at the local coliseum. These games were among the bloodiest displays of public amusement in the history of man. Professional wrestling and boxing today, do not come close to the disgusting horrors that the people of Rome took so much pleasure in observing. Although the games were very bloody and extremely brutal, often killing many men and animals, the Romans enjoyed the scenery of life and death being very near. Watching men fight and eventually die a dreadful death, is what fascinated the Roman population in great degree as the games were one of their favorite ways to spend their leisure time. The ancient Romans had a very bloodthirsty taste for entertainment exhibited in the form of gladitorial combat. The essence of the bloodthirsty entertainment was in the form of the gladiator. The word gladiator comes from the Latin for swordsman, from gladius or sword. The first gladiators were part of a sacrificial rite adopted from the Etruscans in 264, BC, nearly 500 years after the founding of Rome (Johnston 238). The sons of Junius Brutus first displayed gladiatorial combat when they honored their father at his funeral by matching three pairs of gladiators. Gladiatorial combat was originally part of a religious ceremony that was intended to insure that the dead would be accompanied to the next world by armed attendants and that the spirits of the dead would be appeased with his offering of blood (Johnston 286). Gladiators were generally condemned criminals, prisoners of war or slaves bought for this purpose. By the end of the empire, even free men volunteered to fight in hopes of receiving the great glory of a gladiator (Corbishley 44). The gladiators fought in various styles, depending o n their background and training. Gladiatorial combat was so important to ancient Romans that they had gladiator schools to train men to be machines of slaughter for the scheduled entertainment (Johnston 287). These trained machines fought in festivals held for ten to twelve day periods each year and often coincided with Saturnalia, a festival celebrating the god Saturn. Professional sign makers advertised with red lettered signs; heralds also proclaimed these spectacles. Programs were also available to aid in the inevitable betting. The fights were very brutal and gruesome. The most popular fights were against a heavily armed and shielded man against a fighter with only a net and a small dagger. Depending on the emperor of the day, you might see dwarfs fighting women, Amazons or even non-human opponents (Johnston 297). Not only did people fight each other, but also bears, buffalos and other huge vicious animals. The gladiators would be forced to fight the wild beasts unarmed. In addition, many times the beast would be victorious. Beasts were also made to fight other beasts. One could watch bears fighting buffalos, buffaloes against elephants, elephants against rhinoceros. Even the ostriches that were brought in to amuse the spectators were not spared. After dashing around the arena, they were killed by arrows from archers who were located in the stands. Fights between men and tame beasts were also called to demonstrate mans power over even the strongest of beasts. It is sad to note that the popularity of these spectacles led to the deaths of tens of thousands of animasl. Entire species were driven from extinction having been driven or captured from their natural habitat. Hippopotamuses were no longer seen in Egypt, elephants were not found in northern Africa and the population of lions disappeared from Assyria. This quest for bloodthirsty entertainment, involving man and beast, was soon centralized to a Roman theater (Burrell 83). As the popularity of these bloody events grew with both the common people and political leaders, there was a need for a venue of entertainment. The coliseum, or Flavian ampitheater, was erected around 80 AD during the ruling of Vespian and his son Titus. It was to be one of the greatest architectural masses ever built. Experimental and Quasi-Experimental Design There are basically two main categories of measuring variables with a sample of participants or subjects: experimental and quasi-experimental. According to (Hopkins, 2008), research studies can be carried out using body tissues, cells, animals or humans. The researcher is looking for a relationship between the variables, and this can be accomplished using statistics, relative frequencies, and/or correlations (Hopkins, 2008). One can accomplish this by simply observing without influencing, manipulating, or controlling the environment or interaction. One can observe and explore one subject, or one can compare one subject with another (Hopkins, 2008). Experimental Study The goal of this study is to discover whether the intervention of using relaxing music has can impact the emotional state. The hypothesis of this study asks to what extent does listening or not listening to music before a test decrease test-taking anxiety in middle school students? The second hypothesis is to what extent does listening or not listening to music increase test scores in middle school students? If the hypotheses are supported, then the students will not only state a decrease in physical and emotional symptoms of anxiety, but will score higher than the average of their prior three tests. This means that a decrease in anxiety will occur after the intervention, and a decrease in anxiety will produce a higher score. Having one variable decrease and the other increase is known as a negative correlation (Cozby and Bates, 2012). This means that there is a relationship between the two variables.
